William M. Bass ’49
The four years after the war, WWII that is, were truly halcyon days at Chapel Hill; a winning football team, conservative professors, and the good times were rolling at the Deke House. The campus was no place for a maiden lady until she was twenty one. No paved walkways and the uniform of the day consisted of the following – white button down collar oxford cloth shirt – dark grey flannel trousers – seersucker jacket – black knit tie – and most important of all – white buck skin shoes (never cleaned) with red rubber soles. The crowning event of the year, May Frolics, which started Friday afternoon and closed-down early Sunday morning, when the church going citizens of CH called the police. I could go on for pages.
