$25 Million Gift Transforms Journalism and Media at Carolina

A gift of $25 million from alumnus Walter Hussman ’68, his wife Ben and their family reinforces UNC’s core values at a critical moment for the Journalism and Media industry.  The school of Journalism and media at UNC is now the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media

Walter Hussman has spent a lifetime in the family news business. He currently serves as publisher of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette; chairman of the Chattanooga Times Free Press in Tennessee; and chairman of WEHCO Media, which operates daily and weekly newspapers, magazines and cable television companies in six states. He studied journalism at Carolina in the mid-1960s and earned an MBA at Columbia University in 1970. He was an NC Media and Journalism Hall of Fame honoree in 2014. Hussman, his wife Ben, their daughters Eliza Hussman Gaines ’12 (M.A.) and Olivia Ramsey and granddaughter Annie Ramsey joined UNC leaders at the gift-signing ceremony at Carolina. Eliza Hussman graduated from UNC with a BA in 2009. Olivia has a BA from UNC as well.
