1851 Society Recognizes Two Outstanding Alumni

Beta Chapter was the first fraternity on UNC’s campus (1851), and our highest honor for alumni involvement is the 1851 Society. This year we inducted Scott Smith ’80 and for the first time awarded an alum posthumously— Charles M. Shaffer Sr. ’35.

The DKE 1851 Society recognized Scott Smith Beta 1980, with the 1851 award for his years of work with the DKE members and house as their Academic Advisor, and President of the DKE Alumni Board.

“No one in recent years has done more for the Beta Chapter than Brother Scott Smith. No one!” said Jim Gray, Beta ’70, administrator of the Society.  “From keeping the house in great physical shape to building academic excellence to a current GPA average of 3.5+, Scott has done a Herculean job.”

The DKE 1851 Society also recognized Charles Milton Shaffer, DKE 1935 for his work with DKE in the 1971 reconstruction following a house fire that damaged the DKE house and almost closed the fraternity on the campus at that time.
