“Funniest thing happened to a real gentleman at Zeta, the dreary winter of 1961. Dan Luongo Zeta ’62. One bitter cold Saturday night, the usual “faithful” gleefully arrived at our basement party room; “OLD DAN” got pretty drunk quaffing and chugging mugs and paper cups of that revolting FALSTAFF, SCHMIDTS or BLATZ we bought in half kegs. Dan uncharacteristically became less than his usual staid and conservative self singing old Drifters tunes and working in a little Smokey Robinson to boot. For some it was too much to take!!!! What followed could be considered a right of passage or was it some medieval punitive ritual……. unnamed mischievous brothers and a few less than timid pledges hauled “OLD DAN” up by all fours to the third floor and put him in the big dark attic space where we stored our luggage bags, sporting paraphernalia and broken but “someday” repairable furniture. About three A.M. “OLD DAN” was heard screaming at the top of his lungs in this dank and forsaken attic space laying spread eagle atop the strewn luggage…he not knew not where he was, the beer still flowing his veins, his personal orientation go awry, ….a flush…his sweat gave way to chills in this cold abyss…. he surmised he was outside the gates of hell???? Alas! We never saw “OLD DAN” drunk again, but we continued to buy the damn FALSTAFF again and again….” – Bob Bosich, Worthy Consul ’62.
“A bunch of the guys were out on the lawn playing volleyball in the spring. In one particular game, it was a bunch of the guys were were infamous for hiding in the cave and playing video games 24/7. One of them happened to be the pledge master, who in prior days was a pretty good athlete. Beer, food, video games and more beer somewhat changed his ‘capabilities’ shall we say an spiking the volleyball was no longer an option. Well he tried anyway and after failing miserably numerous times, one of the pledges was known to call it as he saw it, shouted across the yard he should hit ‘B’ to jump. Perhaps you had to be there, but most of the house was outside at the time and we all gave it to him (our pledge master) pretty good.” – Stephen Schmidt, ’95
